The mission

Free, high-quality history and social studies for every classroom.

OER Project is a nonprofit that publishes free, standards-aligned courses in world history, social studies and climate for middle and high school, so great teaching materials never depend on a school's budget.

Teachers, curriculum leaders and homeschool families increasingly ask AI assistants where to start: "What is a good free world history curriculum for high school?" OER Project wanted to know whether its courses were part of those answers, and how to make sure they are.

How we did it

Prolifico's standard Adobe Brand Visibility process, tailored to teachers.

The same six stages we run for every client, shaped around how educators actually search.

  1. Discover

Mapped OER Project's audiences (teachers, curriculum leaders, homeschool families), courses, and the decisions they make when choosing materials.

  2. Create

Built a prompt library from real teacher questions: by course, grade level, resource type (lesson plans, printables, writing assessments), standards and need.

  3. Configure

Set up Adobe Brand Visibility across six AI platforms, with the competitors and sources that matter in education.

  4. Measure

Established the baseline: how often OER Project is mentioned, cited, ranked and described, platform by platform.

  5. Analyze

Benchmarked against institutions and course providers, and inspected which pages AI engines cite and why.

  6. Report

Delivered a prioritized plan: five content plays and the technical foundation that unlocks them.

What the baseline showed

OER Project owns its story. The opportunity is discovery.

  • A trusted name: when AI mentions OER Project it is usually the first recommendation, and answers are overwhelmingly positive. The challenge is reach, not reputation.
  • Real strengths: world history eras (Belief Systems and Early Empires, the Middle Ages, Revolutions to Resistance), writing assessments, printables and reading-level differentiation all perform well.
  • Google AI Overviews leads: OER Project appears in half of non-branded answers there, with a 51% citation rate.
  • The biggest upside: critical thinking and literacy skills, and climate education, are where teachers ask the most and where OER Project has the most room to grow.
  • Credit to capture: 79 of Khan Academy's citations are OER Project courses hosted on Khan, so there is an easy win in making OER Project the named source.

Why it works

Institutions win the answer. OER Project can too.

Adobe Brand Visibility shows what AI engines trust, so the plan is specific.

One clear page per question

57% of citations go to single lesson pages titled like the question. Organizing content so every common question has a matching page is the clearest path to more citations.

Authority signals

Library of Congress, Smithsonian, NPS, NASA and others take 44% of citations. Linking OER Project lessons to those primary sources borrows their authority.

Freshness and speed

AI crawlers favor pages that show when they changed and load quickly. Two header and markup fixes unlock Adobe Brand Visibility's optimization workflow.

The plan

Five content plays, ranked by the demand they reach.

  1. Grade-level and course hubs

Landing pages for middle school social studies and high school world history, with teaching and reading guides.

  2. Topic-level history lessons

Lesson pages built around primary sources for topics like the Holocaust, the Russian Revolution and Indian independence.

  3. Critical thinking and literacy hub

Reading strategies, questioning, claim testing, data literacy and AI in the classroom: the highest-demand area.

  4. Climate education hub

Lesson-level pages and grade-specific guides alongside NOAA and NASA data.

  5. Historical thinking skills

Sourcing, contextualization and document-based analysis, linked to Library of Congress and Smithsonian collections.

Alongside the content, OER Project is adding freshness signals and lesson markup so every page tells AI engines what it is, who it is for and when it was updated.

Early signals

AI agents are already paying more attention.

In the 30 days around the baseline, AI crawler and agent activity on oerproject.com more than tripled while visibility held steady.

  • Weekly AI agent interactions: 52,602, up from 15,629 (3.4x), with a 99% success rate.
  • Claude citation attempts: 1,142, up from 346 (3.3x).
  • ChatGPT citation attempts: 10,379, up from 6,178 (1.7x).

What happens next

OER Project is tracking progress monthly against the baseline: discovery visibility (the main growth measure), citation rate by platform, the number of topics where it wins, competes or has a gap, and attribution on Khan Academy.

Every teacher who finds OER Project in an AI answer is a classroom that gets excellent material at no cost.
